Volunteer Opportunities
on the Rooftop Garden
Jennifer Kotkin

Come and lend a hand every Thursday (that school is in session) on the Rooftop Garden. There will be 2 shifts: 8:30am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-3:00pm. The minimum we ask for is one hour. Please RSVP (with Ms. Kotkin at ext 246) the shift you are interested in working.

Once you arrive, please stop by the Front Desk and tell them you’re here to garden. Remember to wear your gardening clothes. We will be gardening, weeding, harvesting, planting, designing and more!
Once you begin to volunteer, don’t forget to have your forms signed or initialed by Ms. Kotkin on the day of volunteering.

Looking forward to seeing you out there!

The Vertical Garden
What Is It?
Frank Mentesana

The vertical garden in our lobby is a new addition to St. Philip’s.  Its intention is to send the message of our EcoSPACES program to visitors as soon as they enter the building.  The wooden boxes are filled with an assortment of plants chosen specifically to grow well in our lobby’s environment. Consideration was given to the amount of sunlight, watering and nutritional needs, and their low potential for attracting harmful insects.  The garden includes Pothos, Spath (also known as the Peace Lily), Arrowhead, and JC Compacta.  If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look as you enter or exit the building today.

News From the Science Lab & Teaching Kitchen
Jennifer Kotkin
Two exciting additions have been added to the Science Lab!

The first is a state of the art, one of its kind machine called an aeroponics system.
Aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or other medium. The word "aeroponic" is derived from the Greek meanings of "aero" (air) and "ponos" (labour). Unlike hydroponics, which uses water as a growing medium and essential minerals to sustain plant growth, aeroponics is conducted without a growing medium.   Because water is used in aeroponics to transmit nutrients, it is sometimes considered a type of hydroponics.  Some of the vegetables being grown are arugula and mixed greens.   These yummy and fresh greens are then harvested by the Middle School Science students and brought down to the Falcons nest dining hall to be enjoyed by all St. Philips students.   We are learning that not everyone has access to fresh soil and water around the world and that this system would be a good alternative to planting directly into poor soil or polluted areas.  Come and take a look!

Pass the salt, please! Check out the Science Lab in room 400 for its most recent addition: a salt water tank to include such animals as sea cucumbers, and other invertebrates!  These animals were not wild caught but were found stranded on local beaches in New Jersey and North Carolina after hurricane Earl blew through. They will be released back into the ocean shortly before the summer is upon us.

Bring Learning Home with Thinkfinity

Each day in our Daily News Broadcasts we have a feature titled “This Day in History”. We find these events through a calendar at Thinkfinity.org and teachers and students alike have enjoyed learning about and remembering some very interesting times in our past.

One event our students have already heard about is Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated from September 15 – October 15 since 1968. There are many suggestions on the Thinkfinity site as to how you can celebrate this month with your child. One of my favorites is to listen to some Spanish music with written English lyrics sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts: http://www.artsedge.kennedy-center.org/content/3772/corridos.swf . Another great activity is to read some stories of Latino immigrants and look at photographs of some of the artifacts from their journeys. This collection is sponsored by the National Museum of American History and you can find it here: http://americanhistory.si.edu/onthemove/themes/story_51_2.html .

The historical event we highlight each morning has corresponding activities on Thinkfinity. If you would like to continue the conversation with your child, or if they mention historical trivia that interests you, you can access more information and exercises on the Today in History page at Thinkfinity.org. Please let us know if you find any activity particularly fun or engaging!
