Thinkfinity
Great Ideas for Creating Seasonal Poems and Cards
Katrina Allen

As we approach a month filled with a lot of card mailing and present-giving, Thinkfinity has a few suggested activities to help your child add their own creative touch to the season. Encouraging your children to create their personal seasonal messages is not only a fun way for them to think about the meaning behind various holidays and events in their lives, but also a great way for them to explore the power of language to communicate feelings and ideas.

Send A Smile is a great activity for children to make a personal greeting card and reflect on the power of language. Meanwhile, Add Seasons to Rhyming Poems and Songs, is a great way for younger students to build phonemic awareness and older students to reflect on the rhythm of the spoken word.

Both of these suggested activities are from Read, Write, Think’s Parent and Afterschool Resources section. Each activity includes step-by-step directions and are appropriate for all ages, although you may want to adapt the instructions for Seasonal Poems to a more relevant example for older children.

Multicultural Night
The New Format
Shamair Todman
In order to accommodate an ever-increasing number of guests while staying within the guidelines of the Newark Fire Department, we have decided to host two shows on Multicultural Night which is Thursday, December 16th. The presentations will be divided as follows:
Show 1 - 4:00pm
(Students must arrive back at school by 3:15pm)
Daycare through 3rd grade, Junior Jammers and Fusion Dance Junior

Show 2 - 5:45pm
(Students must arrive back at school by 5:00pm)
4th grade through 8th grade, MS Choir and Fusion Dance Junior

Each show will last approximately 1 hour.

There will be a maximum of 3 guests per student. Parents must log into the Parent Portal and register online between November 15th and December 1st. Color coded tickets will then be prepared and available at the front desk for pick up on December 6th. Parents can only attend the show that their child’s class will be performing in. If you have a child performing at both shows you will be given 2 sets of tickets and allowed to attend both shows. Tickets will be available for pick up starting Monday, December 6th. Any leftover tickets will be made available through a lottery system.

Parent volunteers will be needed for this event. If you are interested in volunteering for this event please contact Ms. Shamair Todman via email at stodman@stphilipsacademy.org or call x115 and leave a voicemail message with your name, your childs name and your availability for December 16th. All volunteers must attend a mandatory training session prior to the date of the event.
